The primary duty of the board is to ensure SMS is operating responsibly, effectively, and efficiently, and planning appropriately to ensure that our mission will continue to be fulfilled well into the future. The board executes these responsibilities through the formation and direction of committees and through direct consultation with the school principal.
Specifically, the SMS Board of Directors advises the principal on the following issues.
Strategic and long term planning
Business operations and financial affairs
Curriculum and Pedagogy
Hiring, evaluation, professional development and termination
The board's role is to make suggestions and recommendations for the school. However, day to day operations of SMS are the responsibility of the principal and administrative staff. Father Paul Spellman oversees all school and parish operations.
Meeting time, location, and access:
Board meetings are generally held the second Monday of each month from September through June, at 5:30 pm, in the faculty room of SMS. When a regularly scheduled board meeting falls on a holiday, that month's meeting will be rescheduled to the next closest Monday.
At each board meeting, the first 20 minutes are open to members of the St. Mark School family. If you would like to speak with the board during a regular meeting you are welcome to attend any regularly scheduled meeting. The board would appreciate an email in advance to any board member with a brief description of the topic you would like to address. As you know, our school community finds its strength in the committed participation of all of its members. You are always encouraged to reach out to any of the board members individually. Members of the St. Mark's community are encouraged to contact a board member about visiting a regular board meeting to share their thoughts and ideas for making St. Mark School an exceptional student-centered, Catholic school.
