Cool Opportunity

Good morning first grade families,
One of Mrs. B's friends is an author and is about to come out with her second book! Attached please find a flyer for one of her upcoming events in case you are interested! (It goes perfectly with our field trip to the Dogs exhibit!)
Have a lovely day,
The First Grade Team

Dear Parents,

On Friday, May 31st, your child will participate in a social studies project called Market Day. This day is the culmination of our economics unit and is a wonderful opportunity for students to experience being producers and consumers firsthand. It will also help them learn the difference between goods and services as well as how to interact with others in a safe, respectful, and responsible manner.

During the activity, students may spend their time acting as consumers by spending the tokens that they have earned throughout the year. They will also have the option of working at their own booth in order to earn more tokens. Students can sell goods such as food, crafts, or small knick-knacks. They may also set up a game or service such as face-painting. Open/Closed signs will be provided so students can close their shops part of the time and venture to the shops of their peers.

Here’s what we need from you!

  1. Discuss Market Day with your child and help him/her decide on a (feasible) idea for a booth. Here are some suggestions
    • A booth where they sell art they have made
    • A booth where students can make art (painting, origami, etc.)
    • Estimation jar- Students can pay to take a guess and the closest guess wins
    • Games- Students can bring in games (ones that are quick to play are best) and charge to play
    • A booth where they sell treats they have made
    • Raffle- Students can pay to buy raffle tickets

  1. After your child has decided, help him/her make a sign that:
  • Names the booth
  • Tells how much it costs to participate
    • Students may charge a maximum of 5 tokens for their good/service

  1.  Send your child to school with any supplies that he/she needs for his/her booth on Friday, May 31st! Parents are welcome to attend at 12:00pm!

Please do not hesitate to reach out with any questions!

New Writing Unit: Poetry!

Hello First Grade Families,

A new writing unit is underway! In this unit, students will learn all about poetry! We will study various types of poems, figurative language, and famous poets! Students will work throughout the unit to carefully craft different poems and establish their own Poetry Portfolio.

This is often times a very fun unit for our young writers and they may be enthusiastic to bring in poetry books from home or even spend their free time writing their own poems to share with the class. We are always happy to give them a special shout out!

Attached is the rubric that we will be using to evaluate each student’s poetry portfolio. We will focus on format, ideas, conventions, and presentation. As always, thank you for being a partner in your child’s learning. Please let us know if you have any questions!

New Math Unit!

Hello First Grade Families,

We wanted to let you know about our latest unit in Math Workshop! In this unit, students will explore mathematical concepts like doubles facts, three digit addition, and double digit addition (with and without regrouping). We will also be learning about money, currency values, and adding different monetary values together.

Additionally, our study of money aligns with our social studies study of Economics! Students will use their knowledge of money and apply it to concepts like needs vs. wants, saving vs. spending money, and how we can use our knowledge of economics to open our own businesses! This unit will culminate with a very special 1st Grade Market Day (details to come next week) where students integrate all they know about money and economics to create their own business plan and open up their businesses to the First Grade class!

As always, we appreciate your partnership in your child’s learning. If you want to supplement our units of study at home I have included some helpful resources:

LIST OF BOOKS: https://www.the-best-childrens-books.org/teaching-money.html

EDUCATIONAL iPAD APPS: Counting Money and Coins, Count Money-Kids Game, and Savings Spree

Hello First Grade Families,

As a part of our Social Studies curriculum, students will be learning about the invention process and famous inventors in history! Next week, each student will be assigned a notable inventor from history to research and present to our class on Friday, April 5th during our Invention Convention! Our Invention Convention starts at 8:15am in the First Grade classroom and will be followed by coffee and donuts for all families and 1st Grade Inventors.

On that day, students may come to school dressed as his or her famous inventor or something that represents their invention. For example, if they don’t want to dress up as Steve Jobs, they can dress up as an iPhone or the Apple symbol. Feel free to get creative!

We will take care of general research, posters, and presentation practice during class time! If your child wants to do research at home they are more than welcome to bring in notes or articles about their inventor to share with the class (we just ask that you monitor any online internet use!)

You can support your child’s learning at home by finding books or online resources about their assigned inventor. Some great resources are: LA Public Library, International Digital Children’s Library, Epic Books, Kids Encyclopedia Brittanica, YouTube, and BrainPOPJr.

You may consider talking with your child about these questions:

  • Why was this invention important?
  • What would our world be like without this invention?
  • What problem did this invention solve?
  • Is your inventor known for any other important discoveries?

Best,

First Grade Team
