Kindergarten News #15 2018-2019

Happy New Year!

We hope that you all had a great break and enjoyed a joyful holiday season with friends and family.  We are excited to welcome back all students bright and early tomorrow morning.  Make sure to review this week's newsletter to find out what's happening in kindergarten this week.

Please remember that Mrs. Robinson is back full-time this week and should be included on ALL email communication.  Also, please be mindful that Mrs. Penn has returned full-time to her life outside of the classroom and should no longer be included in emails.

Thank you!

Loaves & Fishes Food Drive & Thanksgiving Hygiene Products Drive

Thanksgiving time is here, and we have two wonderful collections happening to support those in need. Please review the following information to find out more about how kindergarten is participating in both drives.

Kindergarten will be collecting baked goods for the Loaves and Fishes Food Drive.  All baked goods should be brought to school close to the 17th-18th.  Please see the attached document for more information.

We are also collecting hygiene products to distribute at the Westside Thanksgiving sponsored by many churches and parishes on the Westside. Please plan to send hygiene items to school with your student(s). Make it a family project that includes students in the shopping and gathering so that they better understand the endeavor.  Collection boxes will be in each homeroom starting on Tuesday, November 13, 2018.  The drive ends on Tuesday, November 20, 2018.

TK/K Reading Buddies
Kindergarten students shared their favorite storybooks with their TK friends this morning.  They read beautifully, making sure to look at the pictures, remember the story, and read.  With each day, they are matching more and more words to the pictures and sounding more like the characters in the storybooks.  What a FUN learning experience for all!

Kindergarten has a NEW Bulletin Board!

Students read and discussed the books It’s Okay to be Different by Todd Parr and Elmer by David McKee to help them build an understanding of similarities and differences, recognize themselves and others as unique individuals, and develop an appreciation for and understanding of diversity.

In this writing project, students brainstormed about what makes them feel different and special and then wrote an “It’s okay” statement celebrating their diversity.

How to Make an Old Favorite
Kindergarten students are excited to take home their own books and get started making their own old favorite storybooks.  You will find a book and instructions for how to make an old favorite in your child's folder today.  Please review them tonight and let us know if you have any questions!  We are looking forward to sharing these books in class next Wednesday, November 14th.

Please send the books back to school, in your child's folder, next Wednesday, November 14th.

Thank you!
The Kindergarten Team

In honor of All Saints' Day, we had some SAINTLY visitors in Kindergarten today!  Kindergarteners listened attentively to our 4th grade saints and asked meaningful questions to learn more about each of them.  At dinner tonight, ask your child to share with you about his/her favorite saint.
