Hello 1st Grade Families,

As many of you may know, February is Black History Month! As a part of our Social Studies curriculum we will learn about Black History and some famous African-American change makers. Some highlights include biographies of Rosa Parks, Jesse Owens, George Washington Carver, and Garrett Morgan.

Throughout this unit we introduce students to some important words that may help shape their discussions on this topic.
  • freedom
  • equality
  • friendship
  • bravery
  • peace
  • caring
We encourage you to ask your children about these words and how they connect to our study of Black History. You will be amazed by the thoughtful (and often times profound) connections and comments they make.

I've attached the link to several children's books that can support your child's learning at home and hopefully foster some wonderful family discussions!

If you have any questions, please let us know!

Dear 1st Grade Families,

Another math unit is underway!  In class we will continue to experience hands-on exploratory learning. This month our instruction will include:
  • 2-D Shapes
  • 3-D Shapes
  • Fractions (equal and unequal parts)
Here are some wonderful resources to supplement with at home:
As always, thank you for being a partner in your child's learning!

Best,
The First Grade Team

Hi First Grade Families,

We wanted to give you a quick update on your child's math fluency and Mad, Math, Minute tests. At this point in the year, your child should be able to answer 15/24 questions correctly on their weekly MMM test. If they are consistently scoring below this please make sure you are practicing math facts each night in order to boost their math fluency. Here are some tips:

- make or buy flashcards (addition and subtraction 1-10)
- make your own copy of MMM and practice timed tests at home
- with your child, review the weekly MMM test and correct errors

If you have any questions, please don't hesitate to ask! Math facts are SO important when it comes to more complex problem solving we do during our CGI Math Curriculum.

Best,
The First Grade Team

Storybook Treasury Videos

Good afternoon first grade parents!
I recorded some of the little ones who read the stories that they wrote at home for the Storybook Treasury and put their videos in a file on the Google Drive. They were on fire today! I will try to do this periodically so that you can see your mini authors in action.
Happy writing!
